About Michael Hofer
Diabetes warrior, executive, author, and the person who wrote down what four decades of type 1 diabetes taught him.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on my eleventh birthday, in Salzburg, Austria. That was the era of urine strips and one-size-fits-all insulin. I have lived through every generation of diabetes care since: the first home glucose meters, insulin pens, pumps, continuous glucose monitors, and now automated insulin delivery that adjusts my dose while I sleep. Today I run on a Dexcom G7 and a Tandem t:slim X2.
Along the way, I built a career as a senior executive at international companies and am currently the chief financial officer of a diversified energy company. I earned a Ph.D., an MBA, and a master's in accounting, became a CPA, and studied at Wharton and MIT. I speak five languages and have lived in the United States since 2012. None of that happened despite diabetes. The discipline the condition demanded of an eleven-year-old is the same discipline that got me through everything after.
The approach
What I eventually landed on is four things working together: a medical team I treat as partners, a low-carb way of eating that makes dosing predictable, movement that is gentle enough to do every day, and a daily practice of stillness that keeps stress from hijacking my numbers. The books and the course put that approach in one place, and I speak about it for patient groups and employers.
Not a physician
I write as a patient, not a doctor. Everything here comes from my own experience and reading. Before changing your diet, exercise, or medication, talk with your physician and diabetes care team. They are your partners in this.
