Disclaimer

Last updated: September 2026

This disclaimer applies to healthy-diabetes.com and everything published under the Healthy Diabetes name: this website, the newsletter, the blog, the low-carb recipes, the downloadable guides, the books, the on-demand course, talks and workshops, and social media posts (together, "the content"). Healthy Diabetes is operated by Michael Hofer ("I", "me"). By using the content, you accept this disclaimer, together with the privacy policy. I may update it at any time; the date above shows the current version.

1. I am a patient, not a physician

I have lived with type 1 diabetes for more than forty years. I am not a physician, dietitian, diabetes educator, pharmacist, or licensed healthcare provider of any kind. Everything in the content reflects my personal experience, my reading of the research, and my opinions. Nothing here is professional advice, and using this content does not create a doctor-patient or any other professional relationship between us.

2. Not medical advice

The content is for general information and education only. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for the advice of your physician, endocrinologist, diabetes care team, or other qualified provider who knows your history. Always seek their guidance with any question about diabetes or any other condition. Never disregard professional medical advice, or delay seeking it, because of something you read, watched, or heard here.

3. Talk to your care team before you change anything

The four pillars I write about- a strong medical team, low-carbohydrate nutrition, low-intensity exercise, and mindful living- work for me. They may not be right for you, and how they affect you will depend on your type of diabetes (type 1, type 2, gestational, or prediabetes), your medications, and your overall health. In particular:

  • Diet. Reducing carbohydrates can lower your insulin or medication requirements and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Do not change your diet without talking to your care team about adjusting your treatment.

  • Exercise. Physical activity changes how your body uses glucose and insulin. Check with your care team before starting or changing an exercise routine, especially if you use insulin or have complications.

  • Medication and technology. Never change an insulin dose, a pump setting, or any medication based on the content. Devices I mention, such as continuous glucose monitors and automated insulin delivery systems, are described from my own use. Whether they are appropriate for you, and how to set them up safely, is a decision for you and your prescribing clinician.

  • Mindfulness and stress. Meditation and similar practices complement medical care, not a replacement for treatment of any mental or physical health condition.

4. Recipes

Recipes are shared for inspiration. Carbohydrate counts and nutritional values, where given, are estimates based on standard ingredients and will vary by brand, portion size, and preparation. Check labels, weigh what matters to your dosing, and monitor your own glucose response. Recipes may contain or come into contact with common allergens; you are responsible for checking every ingredient against your own allergies and intolerances.

5. No guarantee of results

I describe results I have experienced, and sometimes results others have reported. They are examples, not promises. Individual responses to diet, exercise, technology, and lifestyle change vary widely, and nothing in the content guarantees any particular blood glucose, A1C, weight, cholesterol, blood pressure, or other health outcome. Any testimonials or reviews I share are genuine individual experiences and do not represent what you will experience.

6. Emergencies

If you think you are having a medical emergency, including severe hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, or symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, call your local emergency number immediately. Do not use the content or contact me for urgent medical help.

7. Accuracy and currency

Diabetes science, guidelines, and technology change quickly. I make reasonable efforts to be accurate as of the date each piece is published, but I make no promise that the content is complete, current, or free of errors, and I do not update older posts and books every time something changes. Your care team and the manufacturer's current instructions for any device are the authoritative sources.

8. Affiliate links and third-party content

Some links in the content are affiliate links. Healthy Diabetes participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program that allows sites to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com, and I may also earn a commission from other programs, including links to my own books and course on Amazon and Udemy. This costs you nothing extra and does not influence what I write. A mention of any product, device, app, food, or service reflects my own use and opinion, not an endorsement that it is suitable for you.

Links to third-party websites, including Amazon, Udemy, LinkedIn, and any manufacturer or publisher, take you to sites I do not control. I am not responsible for their content, accuracy, privacy practices, or availability. If any post is sponsored or a product was provided to me for review, I will say so in that post; my opinion remains my own.

9. Books, course, and talks

Everything in sections 1 to 8 applies equally to my books, the on-demand course, and any talk or workshop I give. Buying a book or enrolling in the course does not make me your advisor. Course and book content is educational and is not tailored to your medical situation. Talks for employers and organizations are general education for the audience and are not a substitute for occupational health advice or individual care.

10. Intellectual property

Unless otherwise noted, the text, recipes, images, and downloadable guides on this site are my own work and are protected by copyright. You may share links and short excerpts with attribution. Please contact me before reproducing substantial portions. Product names, logos, and images belonging to others are used for identification and remain the property of their owners; if you believe your material has been used improperly, email me and I will address it promptly.

11. No warranties and limitation of liability

The content is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability, to the fullest extent permitted by law. To the same extent, I will not be liable for any loss, injury, or damage, direct or indirect, arising from your use of, or reliance on, the content, including any health outcome, any decision you make about your diet, exercise, medication, or technology, and any interruption or error on the website. Your use of the content is at your own risk. Nothing in this disclaimer limits any liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.
